GRCC Embraces AI with New Incubator and Certificate Program

(Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program) Artificial intelligence (AI) is making waves in educational circles, and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is at the forefront of this movement with two major initiatives.

Introducing the Artificial Intelligence Incubator

GRCC has recently unveiled the Artificial Intelligence Incubator, located on the lower level of the Calkins Science Center at 226 Bostwick Ave. NE. This new space is designed for workshops, presentations, networking, and community use. It also offers a targeted learning environment for educators who want to explore AI.

“We know a lot of K-12 teachers would like to learn about AI,” said Jonathan Resendiz, assistant professor at the Computer Information Systems department and director of the AI Incubator. “K-12 has been moving heavily into computer education. High schools are moving into teaching students computer science, which five years ago we didn’t have. I could see that artificial intelligence could be taught in high school, and I think AI will become mainstream in the K-12 setting.”

Open House and Partnership Support

Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program During an open house, business and education leaders toured the high-tech hub, learning about how AI education can be integrated into their organizations and schools. They also explored the possibilities offered by the new AI Certificate program.

The development of the lab was made possible through a partnership with Intel, which provided equipment and training. Additional funding came from a grant provided by the American Association of Community Colleges and Dell Technologies.

The incubator will serve as a place for community building, education, skill development, mentoring, and networking. It will also offer free computer access for community use during designated times.

Launching the Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program

Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program In addition to the incubator, GRCC is launching an Artificial Intelligence Certificate program this fall. This 23-credit program consists of seven courses, including a collaborative capstone, all of which can be completed online. According to Kristi Haik, Dean of STEM, the certificate can be paired with other certificates, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree, providing flexibility based on student needs and transfer opportunities to other colleges or universities.

Community Impact and Future Opportunities

During the open house, Brooke Storms, instructional technology coordinator at Kentwood Public Schools, emphasized the importance of this new initiative. “It’s another pathway we are developing for our kids,” she said.

Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program Keli Christopher, founder and chief executive of STEM Greenhouse, expressed excitement about this new resource for youth. STEM Greenhouse, a Grand Rapids-based non-profit, offers after-school programs called STEM Scholars for several Grand Rapids Public Schools, as well as other middle school and high school programming. Their summer program, the Sankofa STEM Academy, focuses on different career paths each week, and AI is now one of them.

“AI is the future. We want students to have this experience now,” Christopher said, noting that students can also participate in the GRCC AI Certificate program through dual-enrollment opportunities. “They may only be in middle school now, but it’s not going to be very long before they will have to make some of these decisions about career pathways.”

Artificial Intelligence Certificate Program With these innovative programs, GRCC is not only adding to the conversation about AI in education but also creating tangible opportunities for students and the community to engage with this transformative technology.
